The Comets came back with a vengance with "angry Aussie" Malcolm McKay picking up maximum points to help his team to their first victory. The Cubs started well but then tailed off allowing the Comets to take the chequered flag in all the last seven heats to clinch the match.

Ian Armstrong, riding with a broken collar bone, hit the fence while leading heat 2 but picked himself up from the terraces to complete his programmed rides, while Bob Valentine claimed a win and a second before retiring from the meeting with a suspected fractured foot. Doug Wyer, Stuart Ulph and Taffy Owen rode well for the Cubs, but Lou Sansom, Reg Wilson and rider/coach Vic Lonsdale had the edge as the Comets fought hard to get back into the match and run out comfortable winners.
