The Tigers minus Vic Lonsdale ran the Diamonds close but the home team were never headed. Guy Allott would have made all the difference, but his absence is explained by the following report of the corresponding fixture at Owlerton which appeared in the programme...
AWAY MATCH REVIEW. Sheffield, Thursday 18th April. A cloud hung over this match due to the unfortunate accident to Sheffield Skipper Guy Allott who fell from the tractor on a parade before the meeting. He was rushed to hospital with serious neck and arm injuries and all our good wishes go to him for a speedy recovery.
This left the Tigers a man short and Bernard McArthur was hastily put into the team. The Diamonds were now all set to give the Sheffield boys a hard match and in heat one Brian leapt from the gate and looked all set for our first win, but on the last lap his engine dropped a valve and blew a hole in the piston. This put him on a borrowed bike all night.
This unfortunate incident threw more weight on our other heat leaders, Bob and Ivan, but they both came through magnificently. We saw flashes of the old Bob Duckworth we knew before his foot injury and his track craft was a delight to watch. Ivan mounted on his new bike showed most of the Tigers the way round their own track and his duels with Tommy Roper and Clive Featherby kept the home crowd screaming.
In heat 10 came another of those unfortunate incidents that spoilt a good meeting. Vic Lonsdale leading the field for a win for the home team came down on the last bend and Ray Day showing brilliant reflexes threw his bike down to avoid Vic lying on the track. Bernard McArthur following Ray was unable to avoid him. The results of this were a broken pelvis for Ray, and a broken collarbone for Bernard.
The heats of the match were completed resulting on a win for the Tigers by 46-31.
